Academic Year
The academic year consists of two 15-week semesters (Fall and Spring) and two 6-week summer terms. This creates a 42-week academic year calendar. Click here for the
Academic Calendar.
Academic Credit
Each credit represents 50 minutes of classroom instruction. Three credit classes meet on a single day of the week block for 2 1/2 hours plus a 15 minute break or two days a week for 75 minutes each day. Two credit courses meet for 100 minutes in a block course or for 50 minutes each day in a two day pattern.
Academic Credit for Field Ministry
Supervised field ministry is part of the academic curriculum of City College Milwaukee. Practicums are divided into thirty hours of field ministry and twenty hours of discipleship discussion groups. These fifty hours constitute one semester credit. Students taking eight or more credits must complete one credit of field ministry per semester up to the total of practicum credits required by the student's degree program. Practicum grades are included in a student's overall Grade Point Average (GPA). Students select their practicums each semester, but they cannot take the same practicum more than twice.
Academic Counseling
Faculty members provide students in a degree program with academic counseling which includes advising students on course and credit levels (diploma, City College Milwaukee credit, and Global University credit). During the Registration process each semester, faculty members review a student's prior course completion and recommend course selections to enable students to progress toward graduation.
The Academic Load
To complete the Associate of Arts Degree in Urban Ministry within the two-year time frame, students should carry a class load of 13-15 credits and 1 field ministry (practicum) credit for each semester. Students will also need to take one course during each summer to complete the program within two years.
Global Courses & City College Courses
City College Milwaukee is not yet an accredited institution. In order to provide its students with transferable, accredited coursework, City College Milwaukee has obtained most of its course materials from Global University, a fully accredited school. The college recommends that students who plan to go on to a four-year college to obtain a bachelors degree take the courses for Global University credit since these credits will more readily transfer to other colleges and universities. Those students who are only interested in obtaining the Associate of Arts degree in Urban Ministry or plan to transfer to a college which has an articulation or transfer agreement with City College may take the courses for City College Milwaukee credit.
