The grading system at Urban Bible College uses A, B, C, and D as passing grades. AU, I, NC, WF, or WP do not carry weight for calculating GPA (Grade Point Average). A "WF" will appear on a student's transcript when a student drops a course between the third and ninth week of the semester and the grades on the required work to that point in the semester are at a failing level. Students taking courses for UBC credit and receiving a grade of Incomplete must complete the course requirements within three weeks, or it becomes an "F." A "W" is the result of exceeding the number of allowed absences in the attendance policy and is calculated into a student's GPA. Credits transferred from other colleges determine course completion but are not calculated as part of a student's GPA at Urban Bible College .
Examinations
Each course has its own schedule for exams, which should be laid out in the course syllabus or class schedule at the start of the course. Each faculty member will determine and announce to each class the specific implications of an unexcused absence from exams. Individual faculty members will determine whether an absence from an exam is excused or unexcused.
Attendance
Attendance in classes and chapel is highly encouraged. Chapel is an opportunity for the Urban Bible College community to gather together for worship and prayer, and to encourage one another. All chapels are student led, so attendance at chapel supports and encourages those students who are a part of the chapel ministry. Missing classes will cause students to lose out on valuable material and information that will help them in their exams. Professors will drop students who fail to attend classes according to the following schedule:
7th absence for classes that meet twice a week.
4th absence for classes that meet once a week.
2nd absence of seminar classes that meet once a month.
3rd absence for summer courses that meet twice a week.
A student who is dropped from a class will not be readmitted. If the drop occurs during the first ten weeks of the semester, the student will receive a "W"; if it is after the tenth week, the student will receive an "F" for the course. Both grades will affect the student's GPA. If the professor is not in the classroom at the start of the class period, students should wait fifteen minutes from the scheduled start of the class before leaving.
Incompletes/Extensions
Urban Bible College Credits
For students who take UBC credits, make-up exams and completion of papers to remove incomplete grades may be permitted by the instructor and the Academic Dean depending upon each situation. Extensions must be requested in writing before the end of the term and may be granted by consent of the instructor and Academic Dean. The student will then have three weeks to complete the work before the "I" for incomplete becomes the final grade based on the work completed in the course.
Global University Credits
Students who take courses for Global University credit have six months to complete the course. If a student needs more time, the student must file an extension request with Global University and pay them a $50 extension fee. (This was the fee in 2007; Global University may change these fees at any time.) Students must submit copies of requests for extensions to the records office of Urban Bible College and keep the office informed of their progress so that UBC's records will match Global's records.
Repeating of Courses
A student may attempt to improve his or her grade in a course by repeating the course up to two times. Each grade is entered on the transcript and used for the appropriate semester grade point average. However, in calculating the cumulative grade point average, only the highest grade is used, and the hours are counted only once. Courses repeated at other institutions may not be used to raise grades at Urban Bible College.
Auditing
When a student is auditing a class, no grade or credit is given. Students auditing classes are not required to do assignments or take exams. A student may not claim credit for the course at a later date without officially enrolling and completing that course. A student may seek approval to change from audit to credit by submitting the "Enrollment Change" form to the Dean's office. This conversion from an audit to a credit course may not be performed after the beginning of the third week of classes. A financial adjustment for this change will be made. A student cannot change from credit to audit status without first officially withdrawing from the course after having first received permission from that professor to do so.
Alumni (Associate or Diploma degrees) of City College Milwaukee may audit courses at 20% less per credit than the current rate for audit tuition.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is considered a very serious offense at Urban Bible College. The use of another person's academic work without proper citation may result in serious disciplinary action including the possibility of dismissal.
Students who are caught plagiarizing or cheating will have a personal interview with the professor of the course in which the incident occurred to evaluate the alleged infraction and any extenuating circumstances. A student who is found guilty of plagiarism or cheating may receive an "F" on the paper or exam or the professor may choose to drop the student from the class and receive an "F" for the course. To drop a student from the course, the professor and student will also have to meet with the Academic Dean.
Adding & Dropping Courses
Students must complete an add-drop form to make changes in their schedules. A student is allowed to add a class within the first two weeks of the semester (the first week for summer classes). A class dropped during the first two full weeks of class is not entered on the transcript. A student dropping a class after the second week with a passing grade will receive a WP (Withdraw Passing) on his/her transcript. Otherwise, the grade will be a WF (Withdraw Failing).
Withdrawing
To officially withdraw from a course or from Urban Bible College, a student is required to:
1. Secure a withdrawal form from the Form Center.
2. Complete the form with required signatures.
3. Return the completed form to the Registrar's Office with the appropriate fee payment. Refunds and records on the transcript are based on the date the completed form is submitted to the Registrar's Office. A student who leaves the College without officially withdrawing is responsible for his/her financial and academic commitments to the college. Without officially withdrawing from the college, all grades for that term become F on the student's transcript. Students who withdraw from a course during the first two weeks of the semester will have no record of the course on their transcript. Students who withdraw during weeks three through nine will have the course on their transcript with a grade of 'WP' (withdraw passing) or 'WF' (withdraw failing). If a student withdraws after the ninth week, the student will receive an 'F' on their transcript for the course.
Grievance Rights
Any member of the college community who has a grievance should petition in writing the Academic Dean, who will work with the petitioner for a resolution of the problem. If the issue is not resolved at this level, an appeal may be made to the Executive Director.
Cancellation of Class
The college reserves the right to cancel any class for which the enrollment or space is not sufficient. All classes required for program completion will be offered at appropriate times.
Non-discrimination
Urban Bible College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, national and ethnic origin or handicap, with regard to the admission and employment policies, the educational, financial aid or other programs and privileges available to the students at the college.
Standards of Progress
-
A student enrolled at Urban Bible College must maintain a 2.0 grade point average (70%) to qualify for the Associate of Arts degree in Urban Ministry. Grades for courses attempted at each semester will be computed to determine a student's Grade Point Average (GPA).
-
Students must achieve passing grades in New Testament History and Literature, Bible Study Methods, Introduction to Theology, Homiletics, Theology of Prayer, and Composition 1 since these are prerequisites for other courses. Students must also achieve a passing grade in Introduction to Urban Ministry and Counseling in Urban Settings.
-
A course and its prerequisite can be taken in the same semester, but grades for courses requiring prerequisites will not be recorded until a passing grade is achieved in the prerequisite course.
-
Students may retake any course twice to raise their grade. Each grade will be recorded, but only the highest grade will be calculated into the final GPA. If a student fails the course after the third attempt, the grade will remain an 'F.' If the course is a prerequisite to another course, the student will not be allowed to complete the Associate of Arts program.
-
A student who has more than three incomplete courses pending with the Carlson Institute will not be allowed to continue in the Associate of Arts program at Urban Bible College until all the incomplete courses are finished.
-
Students who are seeking credentials with the Assemblies of God must achieve a passing grade in all courses required for credentials. This includes the practicums.
-
A report of final grades is mailed to the students after the close of each semester. Academic warning notices will accompany the grade report, if appropriate. Grades are not mailed to the parents unless specifically requested by the student.
