Practicum Requirements

  1.  Students taking eight or more credits are required to complete one field ministry credit per semester until they have fulfilled their program requirement. A field practicum credit consists of both field ministry experience as well as a weekly practicum small group where topics of spiritual formation and character development are discussed. There are six discussion topics that rotate from semester to semester.
  2. Four field ministry credits are required for the Associate of Arts degree in Urban Ministry. Two field ministry credits are required for the Certificate in Bible program.
  3. Diploma students take two field ministry credits for a one-year diploma and four field ministry credits for a two-year diploma program.
  4. Practicums do not meet the first and last week of each semester. Students are evaluated and are required to complete a monthly practicum report.
  5. Students should consult the Practicum Handbook for further details of the practicum requirements.
  6. A student must be enrolled in a degree program in order to participate in a practicum. Auditing and visiting students may not sign up for practicums.

Selection of Practicums

  1. At registration, students will be provided with a list of available field ministry opportunities. Students should select their practicum at the time they register for their other courses. In scheduling a practicum, students should remember there are two time slots for each practicum -- the field ministry time and the small group discipleship time.
  2. Students may not enroll in the same practicum more than twice. The College wants its students to obtain a wide variety of ministerial experience through practicums.
  3. Students who plan to pursue ministerial credentials with the Assemblies of God must take the UBC Chapel Ministry practicum to fulfill the ministerial internship credentialing requirements.
  4. Independent practicums will be limited to second-year students and those who already are in full-time ministry. Independent practicums are approved by the Academic Dean on a case-by-case basis.

Poverty Simulation Weekend

As part of the urban ministry program of Urban Bible College, all Associate and Diploma degree students are required to participate in a poverty simulation weekend. This is a 40-hour exploration of poverty. Participants will experience how it feels to live in a community surrounded by wealth, while struggling to feed, shelter, and clothe one's self and family. This simulation is a safe activity in a controlled environment, but it will expose students to some of the issues that people face in the poorer sectors of the urban community. The Bible calls believers to remember and to serve the poor. These 40 hours will leave a lasting impression on all who participate in the simulation, and should impact a student's future ministry.

The Poverty Simulation weekend dates are posted on the City on a Hill web site as well as in the Center for Success. Students need to register for this weekend in the Admissions Office. Students who participate in this weekend early in their program will be able to assist in conducting these weekends for youth groups and churches that come to City on a Hill to participate in the Poverty Simulation.
